Where we work · Karachi airport

An airway bill is not a bill of lading, and the airport gives you less time before it costs you.

Clearing cargo that lands at Jinnah International Airport is a different job from clearing a container at the port. The document your supplier sends is an airway bill, not a bill of lading — it is a receipt and a contract of carriage, not a document of title, so nobody endorses it over the way a bank does a negotiable bill of lading; it simply names the consignee who is entitled to the goods. The airline's own godown at the air cargo complex gives far less free time than a port terminal before storage rent starts, and most of what comes in by air is there because it is urgent or valuable enough to be worth the airfare. Shafiq Traders has cleared cargo at Karachi airport as well as at Karachi Port and Port Qasim since 1992, and we treat air clearance as its own job, not the port process with a different form stapled on.

A different building, a different clock

A container sits in a yard until a truck comes for it. Air cargo does not get a yard. It comes off the aircraft, gets broken down from the flight manifest, and moves into the airline's import godown at the air cargo complex at Jinnah International — a smaller, faster-moving space than a container terminal, built around cargo that is not meant to sit.

Most of what arrives by air is there for a reason: a machine on the floor waiting for the part that stopped it, a sample against a buyer's deadline, a pharmaceutical with a shelf life, a consignment worth more per kilo than anything that would justify a six-week sea voyage. The urgency is real. It does not change what customs requires, and it does not buy extra time in the godown.

Shafiq Traders has held a Karachi licence since 1992 and has worked the airport the whole time, alongside Karachi Port and Port Qasim. The declaration, the assessment and the duty are the same system as any other import. What is different is the document you start from and the building the cargo sits in while that system works.

The airway bill is not a bill of lading

A bill of lading can be a document of title. Drawn to order and endorsed over — often by a bank holding it against a letter of credit — it carries the right to the cargo itself, which is why the original has to be produced and surrendered before a container is released.

An airway bill does not do that job. It is a receipt for the goods and evidence of the contract of carriage, but it is not negotiable and it is not a document of title. It names one consignee, directly, and delivery runs to that consignee once the paperwork and duty are in order — there is no original to chase down, endorse, or explain away if it has gone missing in the post.

That sounds like it should make the airport simpler. It makes it different, not simpler: the bill of lading's delay is a documentary one, waiting on an endorsed original to arrive; the airway bill's pressure point is the clock in the godown, which starts within hours of the flight landing, not days.

What happens once your cargo is on the ground

The steps look similar to the port's on paper. The building and the clock are not the same.

01

Break-down and the import godown

The airline splits the flight manifest and moves cargo into its import godown at the air cargo complex — a warehouse, not a container yard.

02

The Goods Declaration

Filed on the Pakistan Single Window, the same as any other import. Assessment for Karachi goes through the Central Appraising Unit rather than an officer standing over the shipment.

03

Examination, if it is called

Held at the air cargo complex, not the seaport. A shipment selected for query sits in the airline's godown while it is answered, and the godown keeps billing for the space.

04

Godown rent, duty and delivery order

We settle the airline's own storage and delivery-order charges alongside the duty and taxes, then move the cargo to your address.

What the airline charges before customs even enters it

The airline runs the import godown at the air cargo complex, and its storage clock runs separately from the customs process — this is not a customs fee and we cannot get it waived. This is PIA Cargo's published schedule for general cargo cleared through its import godown at Karachi.

Companies we have cleared through Karachi airport

Electronics on a launch date, pharmaceuticals against a shelf life, a spare part for a line that is down — the cargo changes, the godown clock does not.

The godown rent is the airline's charge, not a customs one, and not ours to waive — the same way we cannot get an examination skipped because the cargo is urgent. If your shipment is held for a query, it sits on the airline's clock, and that clock starts within hours of the flight landing, not days. We will tell you it is running rather than let you find out from the invoice.
